 What is Clubhouse?

Clubhouse is an invitation-only social media app for IOS and Android where users can communicate in voice chat rooms that accommodate groups of thousands of people. The audio-only app hosts live discussions, with opportunities to participate through speaking and listening.

The app firstly was introduced to IOS in March 2020 by Paul Davison and Rohan Seth of Alpha Exploration Co. with a beta launch for Android in May 2021.

In clubhouse, all conversations are prohibited by Clubhouse's guidelines from being recorded, transcribed, reproduced, or shared without explicit permission.

In clubhouse, one can only gain access to join if they are issued an invitation from an existing clubhouse user. This posits that you cannot join clubhouse except you are given an invitation to join by an existing clubhouse user.

A text message with a link will be sent out to the new user when being invited. The link therefore will lead the new user to a sign-up page.

Clubhouse Rooms

The major feature in Clubhouse is “virtual rooms” where clubhouse users can communicate with each other through audio. Rooms are classified on the basis of differing levels of privacy. “Open rooms” in clubhouse can be joined by anyone who is on Clubhouse, In “social rooms,” only users followed by the moderators are allowed to join, users will need to receive an invite from the moderators in order to join “closed rooms.” Within a room, there are three sections: the “stage,” “followed by the speakers,” and “others in the room.

When a clubhouse user creates a room, he/she is given the role of “moderator” which gives him/her the power to call users to the stage, mute users, and remove speakers from the stage. When a user joins a room, they are initially assigned the role of a “listener” and cannot unmute themselves. 

Again, conversation rooms come and go as people launch or terminate them.

How many People can join a Conversation?

Presently, the current limit of participants in a clubhouse room runs at five thousand (5000) people per room. 

Events In Clubhouse

Several conversations on Clubhouse happen spontaneously with no preparations, but users also have the ability to plan conversations in advance by creating events. In creating and scheduling an event, users are allowed to name the event and then set the date and time that the conversation will begin.

Once an event is finally created, it is automatically added to the “Clubhouse bulletin.” The bulletin here displays upcoming scheduled events and allows users to set notifications for the events. 

Clubhouse Icon

The clubhouse icon is a regularly and ever- rotating black and white profile portrait of a social change leader. Their eighth and current icon is Drue Kataoka. 

Platforms to access the app

Clubhouse mobile app is currently available for iPhone and Android users. In January 2021, the company announced that they will soon start developing the Android version. In February 2021, Clubhouse hired an Android Software Developer and subsequently launched a beta version of the Android app in May 2021.
